The Health and Safety Executive advocate that auditing and performance reviews are the final steps in the health and safety management control cycle and will provide a feedback loop to help reinforce, maintain and develop your desire to reduce risks to the fullest extent and to ensure compliance with the health and safety management system across all activities.

To this extent the HSE use the following definition - 'The structured process of collecting independent information on the efficiency, effectiveness and reliability for the total health and safety management system and drawing up plans for corrective action'.

The JMS Risk Solutions Ltd audit is a systematic evaluation of policies, procedures, practices and programmes and is essential to the efficiency and effectiveness of your business activities. 

The audit also includes a detailed work place inspection to observe working practices.

The results of the audit would be presented in a management report incorporating a traffic light (red, amber, green) key, together with a comprehensive review of all non-compliance issues with corrective actions and timescales for implementation. Key areas within the audit review would include amongst others:

• Existing corporate health and safety framework review (roles, responsibilities and reporting lines) of your Health and Safety Policy (policy statement, organisation, arrangements etc);
• Workplace risk assessments, including (amongst others), work equipment (including maintenance), fire, work at height, manual handling, COSHH, workplace transport etc.;
• Safe systems of work;
• Health and safety training provisions (induction, general and task specific);
• First aid provisions;
• Accident reporting / recording procedures;
• Occupational health and welfare provisions; and
• Internal H&S inspection and housekeeping monitoring procedures

The key output of the audit review will be a clear health and safety management action plan which will:-

• Provide management with a quantifiable benchmark for standards of existing health and safety compliance;
• Outline key recommendations (systems / equipment & training), to improve existing health and safety practices; and
• Establish a health and safety improvement timeline (actions / timescales and persons responsible).
